In 1882, Louisa Stead wrote the words to. “‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” in the midst of personal tragedy. On a beautiful sunny day, Louisa Stead, her husband and daughter, Lily, decided to go on a picnic on the Long Island Sound. While enjoying their picnic, they heard a cry of a young boy calling for help. Mr. Stead quickly ran to the rescue. The boy was in the water, with his head scarcely above the water when Mr. Stead dove in to help. However, both he and the boy drowned while Louisa and Lily watched helplessly on the shore.

With no way to adequately support themselves, Louisa and Lily were left destitute. Louisa and Lily had no food and no money left to buy food. They had reached the point of utter despair. She cried out to the Lord for help, knowing that she was down to her last loaf of bread. Then, without saying anything to anyone, a miracle began to happen. For days on end, every time Louisa opened the door to her apartment, without a word or a sound, food appeared. Then, her rent and bills were paid by total strangers. With tears of gratitude in her eyes, Louisa penned the words to the hymn, “’Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus” and shortly after that experience, Louisa and Lily moved to South Africa and became full time missionaries. She wrote;

‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to take Him at His Word. Just to rest upon His promise, Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord!” Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him! How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus! Oh, for grace to trust Him more! I’m so glad I learned to trust Him,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend And I know that He is with me, Will be with me to the end. Oh, how sweet to trust in Jesus, Just to trust His cleansing blood And in simple faith to plunge me
‘Neath the healing, cleansing flood! Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus, Just from sin and self to ease Just from Jesus simply taking Life and rest, and joy and peace.

In our despair, Jesus is there. Take a moment to thank Him for all that He has provided, and for those in the Ukraine that are in the midst of Trusting Jesus for their next provision.
